Learn about what EQ is, how it affects you, and why I chose to specialize in helping people develop it.

So what is EQ?

The facts:

Your EQ (Emotional Quotient) refers to your emotional abilities and social skills, including cognitive empathy, emotional regulation, and motivation.

Conversely, IQ (Intelligence Quotient) measures your cognitive and intellectual skills, like working memory, analytical thinking, and knowledge retention.

We’ve all heard of IQ but a lot of people don’t know what EQ is or what the difference is between them, but both play a huge role in success.

An example of the difference would be:

IQ- Learning to drive a car.

EQ- being able to handle the responsibility of driving safely.

Pretty important difference there, right? Just because your 16-year-old knows how to work the car mechanically, doesn’t mean they are ready to handle the newfound freedom responsibly.

I have found that emotional intelligence is the foundation for everything we experience. It has a profound effect on how we view, interpret, and move in everyday interactions, in every sector of life.

Emotional intelligence affects our relationships with coworkers, partners, children, and most importantly ourselves. EQ can even affect how we use or interact with inanimate objects, like the car in the example above.

Recognizing unhealthy or dysfunctional patterns, and prioritizing emotional intelligence development, can completely unlock a client’s success in all areas.

Here’s How

EQ consists of 4 pillars of emotional intelligence.

  • Self-awareness- the ability to perceive and understand the things that make you who you are as an individual, including your personality, actions, values, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts.

  • Self-management-“self-control” or “self-regulation,” is the ability to regulate one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations.

  • Social Awareness- empathy is a skill that allows us to understand how another person is feeling, empathize with them, and take a different perspective on a situation.

  • Social Skills/Relationship Management- skills such as active listening, recognizing verbal and nonverbal communication, and persuasiveness allow you to build meaningful relationships with others and develop a stronger understanding of them and yourself.

Why EQ is so important?

You can see by the descriptions of the key pillars that it could affect every aspect of your life.

Personal life- Underdeveloped EQ can affect your awareness of yourself, your environment, and every interaction you have with the people you encounter. A person with low EQ struggles with perceiving situations in a healthy way. They often struggle to regulate their thoughts and feelings making it difficult to parent effectively. It can make it difficult for them to experience intimacy or healthy relationships. It can affect how they relate not just to others, but their potential and passions. If left unchecked it could harm their mental and emotional health.

Professional life- Emotional intelligence is widely recognized as a valuable skill that helps improve communication, management, problem-solving, and relationships within the workplace. EQ greatly affects professionalism. Low EQ could cause them to struggle with organizational skills, time- management, workplace stress, and conflict resolution.

So you see, EQ level has a profound effect on how you perceive experiences in life. No matter how you define yourself your relationships, or your success, improving EQ is the first step to cultivating a well-balanced, happy life.
